Climbing Rings and Straps

Climbing straps are strips of synthetic fabric used for activities that are practiced in the mountains, such as climbing, caving and mountaineering. The climbing straps have various functions: the lengthening of the anchor points, self-rescue maneuvers during the roping and safety maneuvers.

Climbing straps: which ones to choose?

On the market you can find countless types of climbing straps. The first distinction is between ready-made webbing, or already closed with a seam, or loose webbing, to be closed with a knot, the most suitable is the webbing knot. They are also divided into:
  • Flat : simple strip of fabric.
  • Tubular : a tube created with the fabric and then flattened, so as to appear apparently like flat webbing.
The material of which the webbing is made also leads to a further subdivision:
  • Nylon : a synthetic polyamide used as a textile fiber with which the first tapes were made.
  • Dyneema : a high intensity, non-elastic polyethylene with high tensile strength.
These two materials that make up most of the webbing have strengths and weaknesses, so the choice in the purchase must be made aware of the type of use to which the climbing webbings will be destined. Nylon climbing sling : it is certainly more dynamic, it stretches more easily, and reduces the impact force on the rest of the equipment. More suitable for sport climbing stops and quickdraws, it is more prone to water absorption in case of rain, and tends to freeze faster at low temperatures. Dyneema climbing sling: high tensile strength and high tensile strength, thin, light and less bulky than nylon ones. Abrasion resistant, absorbs little water with a low tendency to freeze. It is mainly used for mountaineering referrals. Alternativa Sport is a sports shop specializing in equipment and technical clothing dedicated to winter sports.
