Ski preparation and repair workshop

What to do before getting back on track

The winter season is approaching and the desire to get back on the slopes is growing. Before donning helmet and boots, however, there is one step that should never be overlooked: ski maintenance. After months of inactivity, the bases, edges and bindings need to be checked and, if necessary, restored to optimum condition.

Many skiers ask: How often should skis be serviced? There is no rule that applies to everyone: if you ski often, after 5-7 outings it is already worth doing a check-up, while for those who use them occasionally, it is sufficient to take them to the workshop at the end or beginning of the season. In any case, regular preparation makes the equipment safer, more durable, and more fun to use.

Why prepare skis before returning to the slopes.

Skis are delicate tools that are subject to heavy wear and tear. Edges lose sharpness, the base gets scratched or dried out, and over time bindings may no longer respond as they should. In practice, even if aesthetically they appear to be in good condition, skis may no longer be efficient.

Figuring out when to intervene is simple: if skis do not glide as they should, if they "brake" instead of gliding, or if the grip on icy slopes is poor, it means they need maintenance. In such cases, contacting a specialized workshop is the best choice.

Many people think they can get away with do-it-yourself waxing: there are kits on the market, it is true, but the result will never be comparable to professional workmanship. In the workshop, in fact, we use specific waxes for each type of snow and machines that guarantee precision and durability.

The ski lab at Alternativa Sport

At Alternativa Sport, we don't just sell or rent equipment: we take as much care of it as we do of our skis.
In our workshop, equipped with a new automatic station, we service, prepare, and repair downhill, cross-country, and mountaineering skis and even race models.
The main interventions include:

  • Sole and edge grinding, to restore skis to optimum condition.
  • Hot or roller waxing, chosen according to the type of snow you will find.
  • Edge sharpening, to ensure grip and control even on hard or icy slopes.
  • Sole repair, eliminating scratches and minor damage.
  • Race ski preparation, dedicated to those seeking top performance.
  • Boot repair and thermoforming, because comfort is part of the fun.

With skis prepared in our workshop, you can count on smoothness, adherenceand safety: three fundamental elements to fully enjoy every day on the snow.

When to bring your skis to the lab.

Many people wonder whether it is better to prepare skis at the end of the season or before you start skiing again. Actually, both solutions are useful:

  • at the end of the season, waxing protects the base during the months of inactivity;
  • at the beginning of the season, you are assured of leaving with skis that are ready and performing well.

The ideal choice is to rely on the lab at both times: that way your equipment stays protected all year round and you don't risk nasty surprises on your first day on the slopes.

Alternative Sports: who we are

If you are from Trieste and the surrounding area, you probably already know us: we are the ones from the mountain and outdoor sports store in Sistiana. Since 2004 we have been accompanying skiers and fans of alpine activities in Friuli-Venezia Giulia with passion, expertise and a focus on service.

Before we are shopkeepers, we are sportsmen: we know how important it is to have reliable and comfortable equipment, which is why we select the best brands and take care of preparing our customers' skis as if they were our own.

Bring your skis to our workshop: we will carefully prepare them to give you a safe, fun and worry-free winter season.
